Guide to
the authorities

App-Store App-Store

If you have arrived in Saxony and already have accommodation, you should register with the relevant residents’ registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) within one to two weeks. The time span varies from office to office. But don’t worry if your appointment doesn’t take place until after the two weeks. What matters is the day you arrange the appointment.

At your appointment you will fill out a registration form and receive your registration confirmation. All new arrivals to Saxony have to take this step. If you are coming to Saxony from abroad, you will also need the confirmation of registration to apply for your residence permit. Please note that in some regions the residents’ registration office may also be called “Bürgerbüro” or “Bezirksamt”.

Documents required for the residents’ registration office

  • Identity card or passport (+ visa)
  • Confirmation of residence (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), completed and signed by the landlord
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Birth certificates of any children in original, with official translation

Confirmation of registration

Don’t worry about the cost of registration— it’s free of charge. Once your registration confirmation has been issued, please keep it safe. You will need this document again and again during your studies. If you move during the course of your studies, for example, you will need your registration confirmation to de-register and re-register at your new place of residence.

Good to know

What is a “Wohnungsgeberbestätigung”?
This is confirmation from your landlord or landlady that you have a permanent residence in Germany. You can easily download the form yourself online on the website of your residents’ registration office. You’ll need to send it to your landlord or landlady, and you will then receive the completed and signed form back. If you live in a student hall of residence, Student Services will fill out everything for you.

Residence permit for international students

You do not need a residence permit as a student in Saxony if you come from the European Union, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland. Are you from another part of the world and intend to study in Saxony for longer than 90 days? Then you’ll need to apply for your residence permit at the immigration authority within your first three months in Germany. Your permit will be issued as a card with an integrated chip, on which, for instance, your fingerprints and passport photo are stored. The fee for the residence permit is 110 euros.

Observe the standard period of study in the event of extensions

Important: You will not receive your residence permit immediately. In most cases, the process takes between four and six weeks. The permit is valid for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years. If you study for longer, you can usually have it extended without any problems. Please note that you must adhere to your standard period of study for the extension. Your university will issue you with the corresponding confirmation. Always apply for an extension before your current permit expires.
