Strong research

The state’s universities are closely networked with non-university research institutions. These include the Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, Leibniz, and Max Planck institutes — all big names whose researchers work together on an interdisciplinary basis.

Saxony is also located in the heart of Europe and maintains intensive international partnerships for knowledge exchange and cooperation in global research networks. The research priorities in Saxony are diverse and forward-looking, from engineering and natural sciences to life sciences and the humanities and social sciences.

Researchers in Saxony have produced some internationally impressive results. Scientists at TU Dresden, for example, have made groundbreaking progress in the development of organic solar cells. A research team at Leipzig University has succeeded in developing new therapeutic approaches to combat Alzheimer’s disease based on the use of antibodies. The Fraunhofer Institutes in Saxony are leaders in application-oriented research, for example in the field of Industry 4.0 and energy efficiency.

The Free State of Saxony supports academics and young researchers in their projects with attractive funding programmes. Studying in Saxony means being part of a lively and inspiring research community.

Close proximity

In Saxony, you’ll benefit from having everything in close proximity, facilitating exchange between universities and research institutions. The cities of Leipzig, Dresden, and Chemnitz form a dynamic triangle in which the state’s most important universities are concentrated. Thanks to the good transport infrastructure in Saxony, you can travel between these cities in no time at all. Whether by train, bus, or car — travel times are always manageable.

This physical proximity promotes interdisciplinary exchange, facilitates cooperation, and enables students to make connections quickly and easily. The short distances also facilitate close networking with non-university research institutes and companies, allowing students to benefit from practical learning experiences and insights into the professional world. Studying in Saxony means living in a region where everything is nearby.

Good to know

Many universities in Saxony are centrally located in city centres and are within easy reach on foot, by bike or by public transport.

Affordable living

Compared to other regions in Germany, rents in cities in Saxony are often lower. This will be particularly good news for students on a budget — and that’s the vast majority of them. Many universities have their own halls of residence, which offer affordable accommodation directly on campus or in the immediate vicinity. These halls are usually well equipped and offer communal rooms, learning areas, and leisure facilities in addition to the living quarters.

What’s more, there are of course plenty of private or municipal housing options for students. From furnished rooms and shared lodgings to whole apartments — the choice is huge and the prices are relatively affordable. The Studentenwerke (Student Services) in Saxony will help you find accommodation.

Cultural diversity

Saxony brings together a range of cultures. The population with a migration background in Leipzig alone comes from 175 different countries of origin. This shapes and enriches life in the city. Around 17% of students in Saxony come from abroad — creating an international atmosphere on campus and plenty of opportunities to make new friends and gain intercultural experience.

Are you open to other people and cultures? Great! Because campus life is also culturally vibrant. Many universities have international associations and organizations that regularly organize events and meetings. This means you can not only improve your language skills, but also get to know new cultures and exchange ideas.

But the culture of Saxony itself also has a lot to offer. Whether art, music, or traditions, there is plenty going on here and everyone is sure to find something to their taste. Dresden, the state capital, is known for its impressive art collection with over 1.5 million works in the State Art Collections. Leipzig, on the other hand, is a real music hub and attracts thousands of visitors every year to festivals such as the Wave-Gotik-Treffen or the Bach Festival. And in 2025, as European Capital of Culture, Chemnitz invites you to discover the previously unseen under the motto ‘C the Unseen’.

Did you know?

Saxony is also home to a national minority, the Sorbs. Around 40,000 Sorbs live in the Saxon part of Lusatia. You will notice this, for example, in the bilingual inscriptions on signposts and place names. The rights of the Sorbs are enshrined in the constitution of the Free State of Saxony and are therefore specially protected.

Exciting experiences

Saxony not only offers excellent conditions for study and research, but also a wide range of leisure activities. Music lovers, for example, will quickly feel at home in Saxony. There is a lively music scene here with countless concerts, festivals, and events of all kinds. And those who want to make music themselves will find like-minded people in the numerous orchestras, choirs, and bands.

Do you like sports? The universities have modern sports facilities and offer a wide range of courses and training opportunities: from university sports to competitive sports. At the same time, the many parks, green spaces, and bodies of water are ideal for outdoor activities such as jogging, cycling, or beach volleyball. And for those who like things a little more extreme, Saxony also offers plenty of opportunities for climbing, mountain biking, and winter sports.

The many student clubs and pubs are perfect places to unwind after a long day on campus and to meet new people. The nightlife is buzzing. Especially in the cities, you will find clubs and bars for every taste.

If you need a break, why not chill out in one of the many parks? And whether you want to go hiking or climbing, a trip to Saxon Switzerland National Park is a must. Water lovers will find numerous opportunities for paddling, rowing, or canoeing. And the many thermal baths, saunas, and spa facilities are perfect for escaping the stress of everyday student life for a while and letting yourself be pampered.
