Find your
place

In addition to your university application, you should also think about where you want to live in Saxony. We have a few tips for you here.

There are a few things to bear in mind when looking for accommodation, because unlike in other countries, your university place does not automatically entitle you to accommodation. You should therefore start your search as early as possible. There is one major advantage you can be sure of in Saxony: On average, rents are lower than in the rest of Germany. The International Office at your university will also be able to give you useful information on finding accommodation.

Student halls of residence

Student halls of residence offer particularly affordable accommodation. Almost all university locations in Saxony have this as an accommodation option. These are apartments or houses shared by several students. Places in halls are allocated by Student Services and are in great demand. So it’s important to be quick to apply for a room.

Private accommodation

Whether you choose your own apartment or a room in shared accommodation, just like anywhere, the options on offer vary considerably. However, living in shared accommodation is very popular among students in Germany. It not only saves money, but also makes it easier to make friends in a foreign city.

The best way to find suitable accommodation is to register on the relevant online portals. You can also place your own search ad on these portals. Social media also offers specific groups for this purpose.

Good to know

Rent in Germany is made up of the following elements:

  1. The basic rent (known as the "cold rent”) is the part that covers the use of the living space.
  2. Ancillary costs are additional costs that cover utilities such as water, gas, heating, and refuse collection.

Both together make up the so-called “warm rent”, which you usually pay at the beginning of the month. In addition, it is customary in Germany to first pay a deposit, which serves as security for the landlord. So you need to budget for this too. The deposit usually amounts to two to three months of basic rent.

An interim solution

Not found any accommodation for when you arrive in Germany yet? Then it’s important to find out where you can spend the first few days before you leave. Student Services can help you with this too.

Student Services (in German: Studentenwerke or Studierendenwerke) can help you find answers to questions about your everyday life as a student.
