You’ve completed your studies in Saxony. What now? Do you want to do a master’s degree? How about a doctorate? 60 hours in a start-up with the prospect of a managerial position? Or would you prefer part-time, remote or traditional office work with a vacation entitlement? Where can you find the perfect employer? Many universities in Saxony have a careers service. This makes it easier for you to jump out of the lecture hall and into the world of work.

First of all, find out what is currently happening in your chosen sector. Some universities offer what is termed "industry mapping". This will give you a quick overview of the areas in which you can work with your degree and which employers in Saxony could be a good fit. You will also find links to job exchanges and professional associations and lots of additional information.

Find your mentor

If your university offers it, apply for a place on the mentoring programme during your studies. People who have already made the leap into professional life will be able to advise you and give you an insight into their experiences. They will help you with applications and show you the employers’ perspective. This usually results in mutual exchange on an equal footing, something the mentors can benefit from, too.

The Careers Service also offers helpful workshops, lectures, and networking events. The topics covered include basic business administration, job searching, self-marketing, crisis management, and job application training. The aim of all this is to make it as easy as possible for you to get started in the world of work.

Application document check

Ask the Careers Service whether they offer the chance to have your application documents checked. You’ll be able to find out what else you need to submit a perfect CV and cover letter.

By the way, Leipzig University and Chemnitz University of Technology also offer an inexpensive photo shoot service for application photos.

The International Offices

The International Offices can also help if you have questions about your residence title, or can tell you when you can apply for a Blue Card or where you can register for which language course.

The Blue Card is a special residence title for foreign academics. It is valid for 4 years. After 21 months, you can apply for a permanent work and residence permit. You can also move to another EU country with your EU Blue Card after just 18 months and simply obtain a national Blue Card there. To get the card, you’ll need to earn a certain gross salary in your new job.

Good to know

With your degree in the bag, you have 18 months to look for a job. Since November 2023, your job no longer has to have anything to do with your field of study. You can decide for yourself what you want to do.
