You’re sure to have a few questions at the beginning of your studies. Don’t worry, many of your soon-to-be fellow students will be feeling the same way. That’s why universities in the Free State of Saxony offer helpful orientation events.

The perfect start — induction weeks

Be sure to get involved in the induction weeks at your university. They’ll give you no end of information about university life, providing introductory lectures on certain fields of study and giving you the opportunity to talk to current students at information stands beforehand or afterwards. To round off, there are guided tours of the campus.

Compared to the individual information days, the extended duration of these introductory weeks also gives you the opportunity to network with soon-to-be fellow students and university staff. This is where you’ll be able to start forming friendships. You will have the opportunity to obtain first-hand information about the curriculum, examination regulations and, of course, the leisure activities on offer.

Subject-specific orientation events

There are 158 degree programmes at Leipzig University alone. A single orientation event cannot cover this wide variety. It therefore makes sense to attend subject-specific orientation events. The advantage of these focused information events is that they provide you with in-depth insights into individual degree programmes. The lecturers focus directly on programme content, module plans, and individual examination requirements.

These events give new students the chance to meet and get to known lecturers, and to ask subject-specific questions.

Tip

Students attending subject-specific orientation events usually share an interest in a very specific subject and field of study. This gives you the opportunity to arrange to meet up with other students to work together later on.

Getting to know the university

Your first time on campus can be awe-inspiring. Many are so overwhelmed by all the possibilities that they don’t find everything right away and are late for classes. You can save yourself this stress by attending a campus tour in advance.

A guided tour of the campus will help you find your way around. Get to know the libraries, canteens, lecture halls, and seminar rooms. Find out the best place to study on campus, where the leisure facilities are, and much more. Existing students usually show you around. They will also be able to give you tips on the best places in the city and will be happy to answer your questions.

Information events on student services

Students help students. Are you looking for advice from like-minded people? Organizations like Student Services offer you exactly that. Before the semester starts, there are events organized by students for students at many universities in Saxony.

You’ll be able to find answers to any questions you have about studying, finances, teaching, and mental health counselling. International students like to use these events to get lots of helpful tips about studying in Saxony.

Look beyond the student world

Unofficial events outside the academic context can also give you an impression of student life in a city. Relax at student parties, open houses, or designated student bars. Get to know new people and life at your place of study.
