Health insurance
during your studies

App-Store App-Store

Health insurance is compulsory if you want to study in Germany — and means you won’t have to pay for expensive hospital stays, treatments or medicines with your own money. As a student, a small monthly contribution will protect you from high medical costs if you fall ill.

If you are coming to Saxony from abroad, check whether your home country’s health insurance is valid here. Various statutory domestic and international health insurance policies are recognized in Germany. Clarify your insurance status with your health insurance provider before you leave for Germany.

Best-case scenario — Your health insurance is recognized

If you bring your health insurance with you, so to speak, you must prove to your university that you are exempt from statutory health insurance in Germany. This only requires minimal effort: Simply go to a statutory German health insurance company before enrolling. They will confirm that you are exempt. During the rest of your studies, you will not be able to switch to a statutory health insurance company in Germany.

In general, statutory health insurance policies from EU member states are recognized in Germany and therefore in Saxony. There are also other countries for which this applies.

Get advice

Insurance, especially in foreign countries, can be challenging. So it’s understandable that you’ll need help and advice. It is important that you clarify all questions regarding your health insurance before you leave for your place of study in Germany or Saxony. The reason for this is that to apply for a residence permit and enrol at the university, health insurance is one of the things you will need.

Who can provide help and advice? Contact the health insurance company in your home country to begin with. Another option is to contact the International Office at your university. They will also help you if your home country’s health insurance is not recognized in Germany. In this case, you will be advised that you need to insure yourself in Germany. The costs for this are around 110 euros per month. If you are over 30 years old, this rises to 190 euros.
